Thank you, HFEE, for our wonderful Rolling Kindergarten Library entitled Room Service!
Ask any 1st or 2nd Grade Village student, and they will all remember the visit they received in their K classrooms when their teachers ordered "Room Service"!
Two years ago the HFEE generously gifted us the most engaging, newest and most interesting collection of books best suited for our Kindergarten readers- and we created a beautiful rolling cart filled with the titles. This traveling Independent Reading Library is "rolled out" and shared, two weeks at a time, with each Kindergarten classroom.
The cart is a model of classroom libraries for teachers- the books are organized in topic bins, both books and bins labeled with coordinated stickers so that our children can easily pick the right book and know where it goes back when they are finished. Our goal is to make it the utmost appealing, fostering interest in and the love of reading to our littlest learners.
This initiative spreads pure joy in reading- there are bins with books without words, informational books all about animals, silly books, rhyming books...all new and intriguing presented in this way. The cart arrives with a "roll out" lesson from me, where the kids learn how to interact with the system, get little "sneak peeks and book tastings" of the titles, and play a game of "hot book" (picture "Hot Potato"), where when you are left with the book being passed you've actually "won" time to spend with that book at your seat (complete with the music of "Who Wrote the Book of Love" as we play).
We've gotten requests for the cart to come back once the two weeks are over- thank you, HFEE, for helping us develop our life long readers in Village School!
