2023-2024 HFEE Major Gift: Math Mobility Program (Grades 4 through 12)

What is it?

The Math Mobility initiative was developed to provide math teachers with the ability to move around the classroom and engage more frequently with their students. This technology transitions classrooms and teachers from traditional document cameras, to more innovative and advanced teaching practices. In grades 4 and 5, teachers have 86" Promethean ActivPanels with a Chromebox and wireless keyboard/mouse, which allows them to utilize virtual manipulatives, facilitate small group work, and project on a touch panel screen for large group instruction. In Grades 6-12, teachers use iPads for annotation and Vivi for wireless streaming in the classroom. This technology allows teachers to move around the classroom while teaching, digitally share classroom documents, and embed student work into their daily practices and notes.

Which classes are positively impacted by it?

The technology impacts all classes where math is taught from grade 4 through 12.

Is this a unique approach to instruction?

This approach represents a more modern and dynamic method of instruction compared to traditional setups like document cameras or non-interactive slide projection. By leveraging the technology provided by this gift, teachers can move freely in the classroom, actively monitor students, and enhance engagement through digital tools. It's unique in its flexibility and the ability to integrate multiple forms of technology.

What age groups benefit from it?

The transition primarily benefits middle and high school students (Grades 4-12), as they are more likely to use digital notes, work with interactive tools, and engage with technology for more complex tasks in subjects like mathematics.

How has it impacted the students so far/what impact do you anticipate?

While the impact is still emerging, teachers anticipate increased classroom engagement, better student accountability, and more interactive learning experiences. The potential for improved mobility, active monitoring, and sharing of student work is expected to enhance the learning environment.

Student and teacher reaction?

The majority of teachers are excited about the transition, noting the benefits of mobility, clearer communication of course materials, and the chance to modernize their classroom setups. While initially there was some mild concern from teachers about the transition period and possible challenges, after the on-boarding training that every teacher received, we are already closing in on 100% usage in every classroom.

Students report that the use of the new Prometheans, and/or of iPads allows for clearer visuals, fosters greater engagement, and allows their teachers to interact more dynamically with them. They are very happy with the technological upgrades.

The initial training for teachers was a great success. Teachers are developing practices and strategies to further their fluency with the technology and we're excited about the potential future classroom innovations this technology will unlock.
